Ginger jars originated in China during the Qin Dynasty  as storage containers for spices, particularly ginger. They became popular during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and were exported to Europe, where they became known as "ginger jars" due to their use in storing and transporting ginger. Initially, they were practical, but their elegant designs and craftsmanship led to their use as decorative items.
