1/12th scale Biscuit tin depicting the Mounted Band of the Household Cavalry and drum master at the 1953 Queen Elisabeth II coronation

Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, most of the proceedings inside the abbey were also televised by the BBC, over 20 million people watched the broadcast in the United Kingdom. The coronation contributed to the increase of public interest in television, which rose significantly.

The coronation have remained largely unchanged for the past 1,000 years. The sovereign is first presented to, and acclaimed by, the people. The sovereign then swears an oath to uphold the law and the Church.

English coronations are traditionally held at Westminster Abbey, with the monarch seated on the Coronation Chair. Main elements of the coronation service and the earliest form of oath can be traced to the ceremony devised by Saint Dunstan for King Edgar's coronation in 973 AD at Bath Abbey.
